Project Narrative:
The overall goal of this adaptation of my paintings was to capture rainwater from the existing roof gutter system and channel it via public art to not only irrigate landscaping but also to supply three water sculptures and a subsurface storage/water recirculation system. Starting from a modified downspout approximately 4 feet above the ground, and using a wide variety of recycled materials including a deconstructed the disk harrow, the rain harvester meanders around the front facade circulating water both horizontally and vertically via steel ‘V’ channels and a solar powered pump passively fed by water stored in recycled wine barrels plumbed in series and connected to the underground cistern and pump.
The sculpture is located at 241 South Main Street in Sebastopol, CA. |

Project Statement:
“As word of the composite benefits of rain harvesting spreads to growing numbers of water conscious ears, so may an associated aesthetic impact the “life cycle footprint” of adding more off-the-shelf plastic barrels, piping and distracting industrial colors to the world. Concurrently, every winter our small office of consulting scientists watches our 1200 square foot roof produce copious volumes of runoff from rain events through evenly spaced downspouts projecting fresh water past the planter islands and in to the street - eventually spilling in to a highway drop inlet serving as gateway to the Laguna de Santa Rosa, Russian River and Pacific Ocean.—Andy Rodgers, Owner ECON |
